Omegna: history, culture and shopping
The city of Omegna is full of history, culture and also big firms for shopping and leisure.
Omegna, a countercurrent river.
When Lake Orta, too often only the homonymous town overlooking the still water in front of the San Giulio Island is quoted. But the lake goes well further and arrives in Omegna, main city of Cusio.
Here you can see how our lake is different from the other lakes in Piedmont and Lombardy, it does its own way: instead of send its water to the south, like the Lake Maggiore, the Lake Como and the Lake Garda, it sends it to the north, as if it wanted to offer it to the Monte Rosa instead to the Adriatic Sea.
It is not a large river, but neither a creek, its name is Nigoglia and in Italian it is a feminine word: “La Nigoglia”.
The Omegna inhabitants are very proud of this rebel river and have a motto in dialect saying:
“La Nigoja la va in su
e la legg la fouma nu.”
“The Nigoglia goes up
And we make the law.”
In order to see these little rebel river you have to go to the town hall square in Omegna where you can sip a good coffee overlooking the river. Or for more romantic people, you can follow the course of the river on the wonderful hanging path.
Omegna: food & wine, culture, shopping
The city of Omegna is located at the extreme north of the Lake Orta. It is an industrial and handicraft city full of industrial shops and outlets, above all in the household sector.
In this article we will guide you to discover a maybe little known city.
During the summertime, it is possible to use the line boats “Ortensia” and “Azalea” which connect Omegna with all other locations overlooking the lake: Orta, San Giulio Island, Pella, Ronco, Gozzano, etc. The lake navigation is an interesting tourist opportunity, also thanks to the charming night cruises. In winter the service is only on Saturdays and on Sundays.
On Thursdays there is the market.
Located on the shores of the splendid and magical lake, it goes from the centre of the city to the Bagnella location. It can be reached by car and by boat and it is a good opportunity to discover the tastes of our territory and, why not?, take home a good souvenir.
The Forum
It is managed by the Arts and Industry Museum Foundation of Omegna. It is a multi-purpose cultural center which can be considered the center for the research and the conservation of the historical memory of the Cusio industry.
The museum hosts a permanent exhibition where it is possible to see objects coming from the famous local household industries such as Bialetti, Alessi, Lagostina, etc. which made Omegna the Italian capital of the production of coffee makers, pots and all objects which revolutionized the Italian and world cuisine culture. In this area there are periodically temporary exhibitions on different topics.
